Please, Do Whatever You Want

I’m kicking a football around the flat with my boyfriend, talking about how much I want to get back into a football team and suddenly feel overwhelming disappointment.

I love football. Like, seriously. Growing up in a house of Liverpool supporters it’s hard not to, but, I never pursued it. I remember playing when I was younger and being ridiculed. I cried and told my mum that I didn’t want to play any more. Instead, I was resigned to the sidelines, supporting my brother as he carried on playing and winning trophies, while I went on bacon buttie runs.

I know what you’re thinking… QUICK, SOMEBODY GRAB THE VIOLIN!

But really, this is no ‘woe is me’ story. I’m just disappointed because I shouldn’t have cared. I shouldn’t have let those boys get to me. Lots of other girls didn’t and they’re playing for the England ladies today.

Now, I would never have even come close to being a professional footballer, but I certainly could have played on a sunday with friends and had a good time. And I still can! I joined one for a couple of months in London last year before moving to Liverpool and loved it. Better late than never! 🙂

I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t let people get you down and stop you from doing what you want to do. If they ridicule you it’s because they don’t understand, so you have to make them. Let them see that what you’re doing isn’t stupid and you’re not stupid for doing it. Let them see that while you might not be the best at it, you enjoy it and you’re learning and that’s really all that matters. As long as you are happy and nobody is getting hurt then I don’t see what the problem is. Neither will they once you show them how puerile they’re being.

It’s a damn shame to limit yourself for the comfort of the closed-minded.

So, please, do whatever you want and be happy.
